Medical Cannabis 101

This course is a baseline course designed for non-prescribing health care practitioners who want to learn the basics of medical cannabis. No Prerequisite required

 This 36-hour course is offered via two delivery timeframe methods:

  • Once per week, over the course of 12 weeks or
  • In a condensed 1-week intensive version.

 Course topics include:

Brief History of Cannabis
Learning Objective: Discuss the historical use of cannabis as a medicine and its subsequent prohibition.

Medical Grade Cannabis Cultivation
Learning Objective: Describe basic horticultural and cultivation requirements for medical-grade cannabis. 

Endocannabinoid System
Learning Objective: Explain the basic structure and function of the endocannabinoid system.

Cannabis dosing and Administration
Learning Objective: Describe at least four different methods of cannabis administration 

Legal Implications for Nurses
Learning Objective: Describe the legal implications regarding medical cannabis and nursing.

Medical Cannabis 102

This course is designed for health care practitioners who want to learn how to successfully assess patients and conduct education regarding medical cannabis. Prerequisite required: Medical Cannabis 101

This 36-hour course is offered via two delivery timeframe methods:

  • Once per week, over the course of 12 weeks or
  • In a condensed 1-week intensive version. 

Course topics include:

Assessing Patients: from A to Z
Learning Objective: Exploring all the elements to be aware of xplain the basic structure and function of the endocannabinoid system. 

Meducation: Helping your patients find the right product for them
Learning Objective: Identify the 5 key elements needed to ensure the patient is accessing the right products from the right source. 

Side Effects & Medical Risk with Medical Cannabis
Learning Objective: Identify medical risks and side effects associated with cannabis use. 

Drug Interactions with Cannabis & Cannabis Addiction
Learning Objective: Examine cannabis use patterns in order to determine potential substance use disorder. Describe the interactions between cannabis and opioids.

Medical Cannabis 103

This course helps health care practitioners understand the medical cannabis research and application to their evidence based practice. Prerequisite required: Medical Cannabis 102.

This 36-hour course is offered via two delivery timeframe methods:

  • Once per week, over the course of 12 weeks or
  • In a condensed 1-week intensive version. 

Course topics include:

Medical-Surgical Cannabis Intervention
Learning Objective: Identify and describe at least five medica diagnoses seen in the medical surgical setting in which cannabis would be an appropriate intervention.

Medical Cannabis & Mental Health
Learning Objective: Explain how cannabis can be helpful in at least three mental health/psychiatric related diagnoses. Identify at least three areas of potential risk with the use of cannabis.

Evidence Based Research
Learning Objective: Describe how medical research and evidence-based practice can be applied to further medical cannabis legislation locally, statewide, nationally and internationally.

NOTE: All prescribing healthcare practitioners will have the opportunity to collect practicum hours via a Practicum Placement and/or work alongside an experienced preceptor within the medical cannabis space.

Medical Cannabis 201: Prescribing

This course is for prescribers and identifies the critical pathways to reduce risk and increase positive outcomes when prescribing this plant-based medicine. Prerequisite required: Medical Cannabis 101 & 103.

This 36-hour course is offered via two delivery timeframe methods:

  • Once per week, over the course of 12 weeks or
  • In a condensed 1-week intensive version. 

Course topics include:

Patient Centered Prescribing
Learning Objective: Identify the key elements to engaging patients in their medical cannabis treatment plan.

How & What to Prescribe
Learning Objective: Identify the top 10 medical conditions patients seek medical cannabis for. *prescribing process maps included.

Managing Unwanted Side Effects
Learning Objective: Identify the common unwanted side effects medical cannabis patients can experience and what to do about them.

Legal Implications for Prescribers
Learning Objective: Understand the legal implications regarding prescribing medical cannabis.

NOTE: All Prescribers will have the opportunity to attend a Practicum Placement to build their skills and/or work alongside an experienced preceptor within the medical cannabis space.

Medical Cannabis 301: Medical Cannabis Office Administration

This course is for office administrators who want to learn the critical path to success to facilitate a seamless and enjoyable medical cannabis experience for its patients.

Prerequisite required: N/A

This 36-hour course is offered via two delivery timeframe methods:

  • Once per week, over the course of 12 weeks or
  • In a condensed 1-week intensive version.

Course topics include:

Patient Centered Clinic Theory and Application
Learning Objective: Identify the key elements required for the successful implementation of a patient centered clinic model.

Clinic Model: Architecture for Success
Learning Objective: Understand the 5 elements required to build a sustainable and scalable medical cannabis business model. You will leave with an understanding of how to apply the O Cannabis’ decentralized clinic model efficiently. 

Clinic Documentation, Compliance & Legal
Learning Objective: Understand the key elements required within the clinic infrastructure to ensure medical documentation, compliance indicators, audit processes and other matters are understood from the outset to increase the success of the clinic.

Front Desk
Learning Objective: Understand the 25 most common questions and elements required for the successful implementation of an efficient medical cannabis clinic front desk.

Licensed Producers & Other Suppliers
Learning Objective: Identify what is required structurally to meaningfully engage the suppliers of your patients medicine. Examples of Canadian contracts and fee structures will be provided.
